2006 Champions – Maria Sharapova continued to play some unbelievable tennis at Flushing Meadows, as she destroyed American Mallory Burdette in straight sets. The Russian was so dominant off serve that she only allowed her opponent to hold serve once. The World No.3 smashed 17 winners and won 53 out the 80 points in the match.
Maria Sharapova came out all guns blazing in the first set, as she absolutely hammered the American. The former World No.1 was in top gear from the word go and kept pressing her opponent. She got the early break of serve and then broke her opponent two more times to wrap up the set to 1. She fired 2 aces and 9 winners in that first set.
The Russian continued the onslaught built on her first set display. It must however be said that the American had her chances but she continued to squander them. The World No.3 was broken once, which was a slightly complacent game, but continued to press on the Burdette's serve. The American held serve just the once in the match, with the Russian living up to her reputation as one of the best returners in the Women's game.
In the end the Russian won the match 6-1,6-1 in just 58 minutes.
