Bidding for second career Grand Slam title, World No. 5 Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic will take on World No. 11 Marion Bartoli of France to secure her berth in the last eight at the 2012 US Open, this year’s last Grand Slam tournament, being played here at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Wimbledon 2011 winner – Petra Kvitova has also had a disappointing year so far, having failed to make any form of impact since that Grand Slam win. This could be her chance to redeem herself, having lost early in the Olympics as well. Kvitova generally tends to do well on the hard courts and made the semis in Cincinnati. Her win-loss record 42-12 this year, which is at most mediocre. She is seeded 5 for this year's event and will have to pull a rabbit out of a hat if she has to win her second Grand Slam title. Kvitova recently claimed her second title of the year at New Haven, which will add some more confidence to the Czech's play.
Kvitova’s opponent is experienced campaigner Bartoli, who has won seven career titles so far. The Frenchwoman has a good 32-20 win-loss record for the season and she has been looking in a good form of late. This will be a fourth meeting between these two and Baroli leads with 2-1 against Kvitova. Last time they met in Montreal this year, where Kvitova topped the French in straight sets.
