2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro will be up against his compatriot and World No. 63 Leonardo Mayer in a third-round encounter at Flushing Meadows on Sunday. Bidding for his twelfth career title, Del Potro is expected to win this match in straight sets.
A highly talented tennis player, Del Potro caught the attention of everyone by beating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer back-to-back to win the 2009 US Open title. The lanky Argentine caused a sort of stir in the tennis world with his devastating flat forehand and emerged as the next big thing in tennis after producing that remarkable performance. Things were not suppose to move ahead the way we presumed after his 2009 US Open heroics, as Del Potro’s career hit rock bottom, when it was plagued with a few career threatening injuries. Del Potro had to miss out the greater part of the 2010 season, but he earned some good wins in 2011 and now in the ongoing season he is back in the top 10. Del Potro has a very good 50-13 win-loss record for the season, which says a lot about his good form. He has also won two titles this season. Back in the top 10 again, we know Del Potro has the ability to win the title again, but he needs a fully fit body to go ahead for that.
Del Potro’s opponent is 25 years old Mayer, who turned professional in 2003, but he is still bidding for his maiden title on tour. Mayer has an ordinary 14-13 win-loss record for the season, but he must be pretty pumped up at the moment as it has been a great run for him at the US Open this time so far, and he must be looking forward to continue in the same manner.
This will be a first meeting between these two on tour and Del Potro is crushing favorite.
