Currently ranked as World No. 12 in the WTA Rankings, former World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia will take on veteran Italian Roberta Vinci in a second-round encounter of the 2012 Rogers Cup, a WTA Premier Event, being played here in Toronto.
In 2006, Ana Ivanovic surprised many by winning the Rogers Cup and continued in the same form for the rest of the season. The Serbian earned the No. 1 ranking in the world after winning the 2008 French Open and many expected her to continue in the same manner for a long time. But, ill-timed injuries halted her progress and consequently rankings plummeted. The current season has been a mixed one for the Serbian so far. Earlier this year, she reached the fourth round at Aussie Open and also reached the third-round at Roland Garros. She was making a great progress at Wimbledon, but then lost to Azarenka in the fourth-round. Ivanovic likes to play on the hard-court and this tournament offers her a great opportunity to make up for the recent mistakes.
Ivanovic’s opponent is twenty nine years old Italian Roberta Vinci, who is currently ranked as World No. 28 in the WTA Rankings. The Italian is gunning for her seventh WTA career title. Errani has been doing pretty well this season but only in doubles. Her performance in singles has not been up to the mark and she needs a few good wins to get back some decent form.
In head-to-head, Ivanovic leads with 5-2 against the Italian. Last time they met in 2011 in Bali where Ivanovic prevailed over Vinci in straight sets. Well, the Serbian is expected to do the same – this time around too.
