After wining her maiden Grand Slam last year here, Na li has another chance to add to her only major so far. Standing in her way to a quarter-finals berth is Yaroslava Shvedova in the Round of 16.
Li Na has had a decent year so far, with an 23-8 win-loss record in 2012. She has managed reaching one final so far this year and has reached the quarter-finals of almost all tournaments she has played. This indicates that she has done well normally, but has failed to impress when it comes to facing players ranked above her. Even in the European clay court season, she managed reaching the last 8 in Madrid and broke the long line of quarter-final appearances after she reached the finals of the Rome Masters. With her finding her feet well on clay, Li is one really tough competitor to face on once she gets into the grove.
Yaroslava, on the other hand has a different story all together, she is a qualifier at this event and came through three qualifying rounds and then reach the fourth round of the main draw! Knowing that she is a qualifier, her ranking is relatively lower and is outside the Top-100 at 142. Her win-loss record stands at 21-8 this year as she looks to try knocking out the defending champion here.
The two have played once before with the Chinese holding the lead. It seems like Li holds the reigns here too unless Yaroslava does something majestic.

To correct, Li Na reached two finals this year - the Apia International Sydney final and the Rome final. ESPN keeps forgetting about the Sydney final. Wonder why?
