Three time champion Serena Williams plays her semifinal match today with a single-minded approach, to extend her winning streak and claim the Venus Rosewater Dish. Interestingly, her opponent seems to have a same set of plans as well, going into the biggest match of her career.
Serena's road to semifinals -
R128 - beat Michelle Larcher De Brito 6-0, 6-4
R64 - beat Anna Chakvetadze 6-0, 6-1
R32 - beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-0, 7-5
R16 - beat Maria Sharapova 7-6(9), 6-4
Serena, at 28 may have a handful of years left on the professional circuit, but she is still the most intense force to be reckoned with. With the serve, considered the best in the women's game, and the groundstrokes that are worthy of another 12 Grand Slam titles, WIlliams is the hot favourite to win.
After the unexpected exit of elder sister Venus, WIlliams is the flag bearer of the legacy that has ruled the green grass for the past decade. Serena has won the pair's only meeting and is looking quite determined to get past the Czech star with all her attributes in place.
Kvitova's road to Semifinals -
R128 - beat Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-2
R64 - beat Jie Zheng 6-4, 2-6, 6-2
R32 - beat Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 6-0
R16 - beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-0
QF - beat Kaia Kanepi 4-6, 7-6(8), 8-6
Petra Kvitova, on the other hand, brings a surprising set of facts into today's semifinal. It's hard to believe that the Czech never won a match on grass until now, especially after her demolition of three seeds in a row- Zheng Jie, Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki.
Kvitova's self belief is the key to her phenomenal performance this year. Even in her previous round match against Estonian Kaia Kanepi, where she squandered Kanepi's 4-0 final set lead, it was her mental toughness that rescued her out of a critical situation.
