Vera Zvonareva from Russia seems to having her strength tested as she has had high-pressure previous matches in the tournament. Her Rogers Cup run came to an end in the quarterfinals where she lost to Kim Clijsters of Belgium in three sets. At the US Open, its been demanding for her as she has already had two tie-break sets in the tournament. She is experiencing minor problems with closing the match as she let 25th seed Alexandra Dulgheru creep into the second set. She is playing Andrea Petkovic from Germany in the fourth round.
Petkovic has been displaying great character and presence of mind in this tournament as she managesd to defeat 17th seed Nadia Petrova in a close three setter first round match as she defeated her in a third set tiebreker. Petkovic has thereafter had another close three set encounter against American, Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the second round but then got the much wanted rest with a walkover in the third round. She will be able to handle the pressuring situations in a better way as she has been through a couple in the tournament so far.
Zvonareva has been performaing consistently and is seeded out of the top five at number 7. She is ranked at world number 8 among the WTA rankings. Petkovic on the other hand is ranked just within the top fourty players at 38 in the WTA rankings.
This the first time that both the palyers will be playing each other. This tournament remains vital for Petkovic as it will improve her rankings to a huge extent. Zvonareva will want to record a god run to try and step into the top five in the rankings. Zvonareva has a win/loss record of 33/14 this year. Petkovic has to improve as she has a win/loss record of 25/21 this year.
Zvonareva has free flowing gorund strokes and a tactical serve to support it. She also has the capacity to take the nail bitting situations in her stride. Petkovic will have work the same magic she worked out against Petrova and maintain high level of consistency to have a chance in this match. This match has all the possibilities and the traits to be a full fledged three set marathon.
