The rigorous Russian, Mikhail Youzhny has been working hard to win titles this year as he has obtained only one this year. Youzhny failed to win any match in Cincinnati as he lost to Richard Gasquet in the first round against whom he could not take a single set . His performance at the US Open has been commendable as he has battled his way to the fourth round by defeating the likes of Dudi Sela and the towering American John Isner in the tournament. He had an amazing match against the American and defeated him in four sets which included two nail-biting tiebreak sets. He will be playing Tommy Robredo in the fourth round.
Robredo has been there among the best names of tennis for almost a decade now. He is a swift Spaniard who can run down any ball on any extreme end of the court. Robredo has improved his serve in the recent years to become more lethal as an opponent. He has had good matches in the prevoius rounds. He stretched Micheal Llodra to his limits in the previous match who eventually retired in the fourth set.
Youzhny has been improving slowly as he is now at world number 14 among the ATP rankings. He is the 12th seeded player in this tournament. Robredo has an ATP world ranking of 41 and is unseeded in the tournament .
Robredo has played the Russian three times before and leads at 2-1 as fas as the head-to-head count is concerned. The last time they met was way back in 2006 where Youzhny recorded an easy win in three straight sets. Youzhny will be hungry for more wins as he will be desperate to make it big at a Grand Slam. Youzhny has a win/loss record of 30/14 this year. Robredo has played less number of matches and will have to improve his win/loss record which stands at 14/18 this year.
Youzhny can adapt well to any opponent on court. He has a huge serve and a thundering forehand to support it. Roberedo uses his footwork to do the talking as he can frustrate anyone by putting numerous amount of balls back into the court. The match will also be a showcase to one of the most wonderful single-handed backhands of the game. This set up will be filled with brisk rallies and maginficent stroke play. A five set marathon can be a possibility with both of these talented palyers battling each other for a place in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
