In her second round match on Arthur Ashe Stadium, 2006 champion Maria Sharapova takes on Czech veteran Iveta Benesova. Sharapova is only the third player among the active crop of WTA stars to have won three different slams (others being Serena Williams and Justine Henin). Ever since her return on the circuit from an injury hiatus, the Russian has given notable results and claimed as many as 3 WTA titles. This year she not only emerged triumphant on two occasions, she also finished runner up in events like Cincinnati. Although a minor injury she took in the Cincy final is a bit of a concern, Sharapova is otherwise a definite contender for the title in New York.
Her opponent, Czech Iveta Benesova is enjoying a relatively successful season on WTA tour. After claiming her second WTA title in Fes, she registered on of the biggest wins of her career in Montreal after defeating top seed Jelena Jankovic in straight sets. Technique wise, Benesova, being a doubles specialist, is very keen on coming to net, and with utmost precision. She can definitely challenge Sharapova with solid net play. However, the Russian's better shotmaking will be a challenge in turn for the Czech star.
Sharapova clearly has an edge in the match but if Benesova's past results are to be taken into consideration, this match up may go to the third sets as well.
TennisEarth.com's Pick - Sharapova in two closely fought sets.
