World no.2 and top seed Roger Federer will take on the world no. 47 in the final of the If Stockholm Open 2010, an ATP World Tour 250 event being played here in Moscow, Russia. If Federer wins this title, then he will surpass great Pete Sampras in terms of overall titles list. On the other hand, Mayer, who has been playing really well this week has to come up with something really good to stop the perfect Federer from winning his 64th career ATP World Tour title.
Mayer did emphatically well by defeating the second-seed Robin Soderling in the quarterfinal and then he rallied past Jarkko Nieminen in the semi-final to come this far in the tournament. But, this time he will face Federer, who subdued the German in straight sets in their previous two meetings. Last time they met in the second round of the Australian Open 2006, where Federer defeated the German with a 6-1 6-4 6-0 scoreline.
Mayer became the first German to reach the final, here in Stockhom since Boris Becker clinched the title in 1994. If Mayer succeeds to defeat Federer, then he will cause the biggest upset of the tournament and become Germany’s first title winner on the ATP World Tour this year.
TennisEarth’s Pick: Federer in straight sets!
