Safin won, 6-4,6-3,6-3
Going down memory lane, there is another final that surprised in a big way. Pete Sampras had only been broken four times in the tournament, but this immensely talented Russian broke the Sampras serve 4 times in the final alone.
Also something that was extraordinary about this final was the fact that, Marat Safin had had to endure a difficult round of fixtures, which meant that he had already struggled through the opening rounds winning two of his match in 5 sets en route to the final.
Sampras on the other hand, had dropped just that one set and with the home support behind him, the American was the firm favorite to add a fifth US Open crown to his name.
In the final, Safin played a match that was just unbelievable as Sampras quickly faded away. Safin hid a trademark backhand cross court winner at match point to seal victory and his first Grand Slam crown.
