It's been a really tough decision, and I love playing in Paris, but after seeking medical advice I'm not fit to compete. Apologies to the organisers and thanks to everyone for the messages of support. Now my complete focus is on getting back on the court as soon as possible.

- Andy Murray of Great Britain pulled out of the 2013 French Open with a back injury.
I mean it's been done before. I've done it myself, but you sort of have to beat yourself. The level (Serena's) at when she's playing well, I don't think anybody can beat her. Anybody, no matter great they are, everybody has bad days. Unless something happens that's unforeseen, it would be pretty hard-pressed to make an argument for anyone other than (Novak) Djokovic to beat him. It's similar to Serena. It's possible because maybe mentally he'll have a slight letdown because he's won it so many times, and maybe there will be that day where he has that off day.

- John McEnroe believes that compatriot Serena Williams and reigning champion Rafael Nadal are the hands down favourites at the upcoming French Open in Paris.
I am playing well and I am healthy, so I have everything to play for next week. This week was good to get an idea about what is working. Novak has beaten Rafa once in Monaco, so he knows how to win, but only Robin Soderling has beaten him in Paris. It will be difficult.

- Roger Federer remained positive about his prospects at Roland Garros and also admitted that Rafael Nadal would be a favorite going into the second Grand Slam of the year.
If you told me four or five months ago that after eight tournaments I would have won six titles from eight finals, I would say you are crazy. To win three Master 1000 and two 500 tournaments is more than I ever dreamed.

- Rafael Nadal reclaimed the Spanish No.1 spot by becoming the new World No.4, overtaking fellow countryman David Ferrer.
I'd be very surprised if I was playing in Paris. I felt pain today, the same as in Madrid. I took a few days off after Madrid. I hit yesterday and played some points. But I was still sore today. We will have to wait and see on Paris. I'll try to make a decision after the next five days or so. I need some days off for it to hopefully settle down. (The back) has not been perfect for a long period, I want it to start feeling good again. Everyone goes into matches with niggles, but this is very frustrating. Some shots hurt more on clay because the movement is so exaggerated. I don't want to go into details, but I've got a disc problem, it changes week to week. It's been an issue for a while, but I want to make sure it goes away.

- Andy Murray has admitted that he could miss the French Open after a recurring lower back injury forced him to retire from his match against Marcel Granollers at the Rome Masters yesterday.
