The double handed grip was first practiced and successfully pulled off by Jimmy Connors. It is obtained by holding the racquet with right hand using regular Continental grip, then placing the left hand above holding it in a left-handed Semi-Western Forehand grip.
Pros: More power and hit towards the deep part of the court. Shoulder strength is the major way to use the strength and direct the ball towards the court. It is also good on low balls as an extra hand can add punch to the strokes.
Cons: More effort to direct the ball is needed as the hip rotation in put into action. For two-handed backhands the transition to a sudden forehand or a single handed backhand volley is also very difficult to perform.
