Open era -

In order to abolish the distinction between professionals and amateur players, in 1968 a consent was signed which allowed both types of players to compete in Grand slam events. This came as welcome change among players, professionals in particular, who were then able to make their living out of it. French Open became the first Grand Slam event to go open, followed by the other three majors.

Computer rankings -

In 1973, the first ever computer rankings were released, soon after the formation of the women's and men's governing bodies, the WTA and ATP tour. Ilie Nastase became the first ever No.1 in men's competition in August 1973 whereas American Chris Evert was crowned the first women's No.1 in April 1975, when the weekly rankings were released.

Equal prize money -

United Nations mission on Gender Equality achieved new heights when Billie Jean King's dream of helping the professional women player get equal prize money became a reality. During the 2007 Wimbledon championships, Venus Williams openly criticized the All England Lawn tennis Club's decision to not reward the women equally, which led to a serious discussion in the parliament, initiated by Prime Minister of Britain, Tony Blair and resulted in All England Lawn tennis Club granting women equal prize money.

There's always the issue of equal work for equal pay though - I still think women should have to play best of 5 sets in Grand Slams.

Venus and Billie Jean did great work in getting equality, I know some of the players have problems with the rankings, but you never hear the number one complaining ;)
