In a battle of the unseeded, Yanina Wickmayer, the 50th ranked teenager, overwhelms Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine in straight sets, 7-5 6-4, to enter her first ever career semi-final of a Grand Slam.
With the win, she became the second Belgian in the US Open 2009 semis besides comeback queen Kim Clijsters.
Wickmayer struck 31 winners as compared to 15 by Bondarenko. Though she committed 35 unforced errors, her big number of winners made up for the flaw. Bondarenko had a huger difference as she committed 31 unforced errors. The Belgian converted 5 of the 9 break point opportunities while her opponent converted just 3 of 9.
